Cold Climate Plant Care Guide
Growing Successfully in Cold Climates
At Navigators Nursery, we specialize in plants that thrive in cold-climate conditions. Located at 500m elevation, we understand the unique challenges gardeners face in frosty winters, variable rainfall, and windy conditions. Our goal is to provide plants that not only survive but flourish in these environments, backed by almost 30 years of horticultural experience.
Understanding Your Microclimates
Every garden has its own microclimates, and selecting the right plants for each area is essential. North and west-facing areas receive full sun and are ideal for sun-loving perennials, flowering plants, hedges, and trees that can enjoy midday and afternoon warmth. East and south-facing areas offer protection from harsh afternoon sun and wind, making them perfect for shade-tolerant species, ferns, and plants that prefer a cooler, sheltered environment.
Frost Protection and Care
Even the hardiest plants benefit from thoughtful care. Using frost cloth or other coverings, when plants are younger, watering in the morning, and choosing frost-hardy varieties suited to our elevation all help minimize frost damage. Planning plantings around seasonal conditions ensures your garden remains vibrant year-round.
Our Range
Navigators Nursery offers a wide selection of trees, perennials, native plants, hedges, border plants, flowering plants, and members of the protea family. Each plant is carefully selected and tested in local conditions to ensure performance and reliability. In addition to plants, we provide garden ornaments, giftware, and personalized consultations and garden design services to help you create a garden tailored to your needs.
