Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood'

Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood’, commonly known as Bloodgood Japanese Maple, is a beautiful deciduous tree prized for its rich burgundy-red foliage and spectacular autumn colour. The deeply lobed leaves hold their dark colour through spring and summer before transforming into brilliant crimson and scarlet shades in autumn.

Growing to around 5 metres tall and 3 metres wide, ‘Bloodgood’ develops an elegant upright form and makes a stunning feature tree for the garden. Its relatively compact habit also makes it suitable for smaller gardens, courtyards and larger pots where its changing foliage can be enjoyed throughout the seasons.

It prefers fertile, well-drained soil with consistent moisture and is best grown in a sheltered position with morning sun or filtered light. While it can tolerate full sun in cooler climates, protection from harsh afternoon sun and hot winds helps prevent leaf scorch. ‘Bloodgood’ is frost hardy and particularly well suited to the cold conditions experienced around Ballarat.
