Acer palmatum 'Sango-kaku' (Senkaki) – Coral Bark Maple

Acer palmatum 'Sango-kaku', also known as 'Senkaki' or Coral Bark Maple, is an elegant deciduous Japanese maple valued for its coral-red young stems. These colourful branches stand out through winter, bringing interest to the garden after the leaves have fallen.

Fresh green foliage emerges in spring and creates a lovely summer canopy before turning golden yellow with apricot tones in autumn. Plant it where you can enjoy both the autumn display and the bright young branches from a window or garden path.

Mature size: approximately 6m tall × 5m wide, depending on growing conditions. Allow room for its canopy to develop.

Position: A sheltered garden with morning sun and afternoon shade. Protect from hot, drying winds and harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the foliage.

Soil and care: Grow in moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Water regularly while establishing and during dry periods. Mulch to conserve moisture and keep roots cool, keeping mulch clear of the trunk. Avoid waterlogged soil.

Frost hardy when established and well suited to Ballarat's cold winters in a sheltered position. Tender new spring growth can still be damaged by late frosts.
