Camellia japonica ‘Volunteer’ – Ruffled Pink & White Camellia
Camellia japonica ‘Volunteer’ – Ruffled Pink & White Camellia
Camellia japonica ‘Volunteer’ is a beautiful evergreen camellia with large, wonderfully ruffled blooms that open in soft pink and white before deepening to rich pink and red as the flowering season progresses. Some later flowers can become almost entirely red, giving this unusual variety a constantly changing display through autumn and winter.
Growing to around 2 metres tall and 1–2 metres wide, ‘Volunteer’ has an upright, bushy habit that makes it an excellent choice for a feature plant, informal hedge, screen or large pot. Its glossy dark green foliage provides year-round structure and a beautiful backdrop for the striking flowers.
Plant in well-drained, humus-rich soil in morning sun, part shade or a lightly shaded position. Keep the soil consistently moist while establishing and protect it from hot, drying conditions. Frost hardy and well suited to a sheltered position in our Ballarat cold climate, its flowers and young growth benefit from protection against severe frost.
At Navigators Nursery, your frost-hardy nursery near Ballarat, we carefully select plants with our local conditions in mind. Camellia ‘Volunteer’ is a particularly lovely choice for bringing colour and interest to the garden during the cooler months.
