Hydrocotyle verticillata - Shield Pennywort

Hydrocotyle verticillata, commonly known as Shield Pennywort, is an attractive aquatic plant with rounded, shield-shaped green leaves held on slender stems. Its soft, spreading habit creates a natural green carpet around pond edges and water features, softening the transition between water and garden.

Growing to approximately 7 cm tall and spreading to around 50 cm wide, Shield Pennywort is a low-growing, creeping plant that spreads through shallow water or across consistently moist soil. Tiny cream-coloured flowers appear through the warmer months, adding a delicate touch to its fresh green foliage.

Plant in full sun to part shade in moist soil or shallow water. Frost tolerant and suited to cold temperate conditions, Shield Pennywort is a useful choice for water gardens around Ballarat. It can also be grown in containers, shallow ponds and water bowls.

At Navigators Nursery near Ballarat, Shield Pennywort offers a soft, natural layer of greenery for ponds and water features, with distinctive foliage and a gently spreading form.
