Lepironia articulata - Cigar Rush / Grey Rush / Grey Sedge
Lepironia articulata, commonly known as Cigar Rush, Grey Rush or Grey Sedge, is an attractive Australian native aquatic plant with tall, slender, grey-green stems and distinctive dark brown, cigar-shaped flower and seed heads. Its upright form brings structure and texture to ponds, dams and water features, while its natural appearance suits wildlife-friendly water gardens.
Growing to approximately 1–2 metres tall and 30–60 cm wide, Cigar Rush forms an upright clump with a strong architectural shape. It is well suited to planting in shallow water or consistently wet, waterlogged areas, particularly around the edges of larger ponds and dams.
Plant in a sunny position with consistently moist to wet conditions. Once established, it can grow in water up to approximately 1 metre deep. Tolerant of cold temperate conditions, Cigar Rush is suited to cooler gardens and the frosty conditions experienced around Ballarat.
At Navigators Nursery near Ballarat, Cigar Rush is an interesting Australian native for adding height, texture and natural character to a pond, dam or wet garden.
