Leucadendron - Yellow Countess - Conebush
Leucadendron - Yellow Countess - Conebush
Description
Leucadendron 'Yellow Countess' (Leucadendron salignum cultivar) grows as a neat, upright shrub reaching around 1 metre tall and wide. Its foliage is green through most of the year, turning pale yellow in winter when abundant yellow bracts appear at the branch tips, creating a luminous display. These long-lasting blooms also make excellent cut flowers.
Growing Conditions
This hardy shrub thrives best in full sun and well-drained, slightly acidic soils. It is suitable for coastal gardens and can tolerate frosts down to −5 °C once established. The plant performs well in garden beds, slopes, or large containers, and its compact form makes it excellent for mixed native plantings or hedging.
Care and Maintenance
While drought tolerant after establishment, it benefits from regular watering during its first growing season. Prune lightly after flowering in spring to encourage new growth and maintain a compact shape. Avoid heavy feeding; instead, apply a low-phosphorus native fertiliser in spring.
Landscape Uses
- Perfect for rockeries, native borders, or small hedges
- Excellent as a mass planting or feature specimen
- Popular choice for cut and dried flower arrangements
- Attracts birds, bees, and butterflies, adding biodiversity to the garden
