Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Worplesdon’ – Worplesdon Sweet Gum

Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Worplesdon’, commonly known as Worplesdon Sweet Gum, is a magnificent deciduous tree prized for its spectacular autumn colour. Its deeply lobed, glossy green leaves develop through shades of yellow, orange, red and rich burgundy in autumn, often displaying several colours on the tree at the same time.

Growing to around 10–12 metres tall and 7–9 metres wide, ‘Worplesdon’ develops a pyramidal shape when young, gradually becoming broader as it matures. It is an impressive specimen tree best suited to larger gardens, open lawns and properties with plenty of room for its canopy and roots to develop. Allow generous space, as size can vary with age and growing conditions.

It prefers a sunny position and moist, well-drained soil, ideally slightly acidic. Water regularly while establishing. Its vigorous root system means it is best planted well away from drains, paving and other underground services. Highly frost tolerant, ‘Worplesdon’ is well suited to our Ballarat cold climate.
