Pinus thunbergii, commonly known as Japanese Black Pine, is a striking evergreen conifer with deep-green needles, distinctive pale buds and dark, rugged bark that develops character with age. Its naturally irregular branching gives it a strong architectural presence.

Reaching approximately 10 metres tall and 6 metres wide in some garden settings, Japanese Black Pine can grow substantially larger over time when left unpruned. Allow ample room for its spreading canopy to develop. It is also highly valued for bonsai and Japanese-style gardens, where careful training can create beautiful sculptural forms.

Plant in a sunny position with well-drained soil. Water regularly during establishment; mature trees tolerate wind, coastal salt exposure and periods of dry conditions. Frost tolerant and suited to Ballarat’s cold climate, it provides strong evergreen structure throughout the year.

At Navigators Nursery near Ballarat, Japanese Black Pine offers distinctive foliage, rugged character and lasting garden presence, whether planted as a spacious feature tree or developed as a bonsai.
