Platanus × acerifolia - London Plane Tree
Platanus × acerifolia - London Plane Tree
London Plane Tree is a magnificent deciduous tree renowned for its stately presence and distinctive mottled bark that peels to reveal cream, grey, and olive tones. This hybrid between the American Sycamore and Oriental Plane is one of the world's most successful street trees, prized for its adaptability and resilience.
Growing to approximately 20-30 metres tall with a broad, spreading canopy of 15-20 metres, the London Plane is ideal for large gardens, parks, and avenues where its impressive size can be fully appreciated. The large, maple-like leaves provide excellent summer shade and turn golden-brown in autumn before falling.
Platanus × acerifolia thrives in full sun and is remarkably tolerant of urban conditions, pollution, compacted soils, and drought once established. It shows excellent frost tolerance, making it well-suited to cold climate gardens in the Ballarat region. This low-maintenance tree is also resistant to most pests and diseases.
