Prunus dulcis – Dwarf Self-Pollinating Almond
Prunus dulcis – Dwarf Self-Pollinating Almond
Prunus dulcis (Dwarf Self-Pollinating Almond) is a compact deciduous nut tree with delicate white to pale pink blossoms in late winter to early spring, followed by sweet, paper-shelled almonds ripening in autumn. Self-pollinating, it can produce a crop with just one tree.
Growing approximately 2m tall and 2m wide, it is ideal for smaller gardens and large pots. Enjoy its early blossom display close to a sunny patio, with the prospect of a home-grown almond harvest later in the season.
Position: Full sun in a warm, sheltered spot with well-drained soil. Avoid frost pockets and waterlogged ground.
Care: Water regularly while establishing and during dry periods, especially when growing in a pot. Mulch to conserve moisture, keeping the trunk clear. Use a large container with good drainage and monitor moisture closely.
Ballarat growing advice: Almonds tolerate cold winters, but early flowers are vulnerable to late frosts, which can reduce or prevent a crop. Choose a protected, sunny microclimate and protect blossom where practical. Cropping will depend on seasonal conditions.
At Navigators Nursery, your frost-hardy nursery near Ballarat, we carefully select plants suited to local conditions and help you choose edible trees for our cold climate.
