Rhododendron ‘Saffron Queen’ – Golden Yellow Flowering Shrub

Rhododendron ‘Saffron Queen’ is a beautiful evergreen rhododendron that produces striking clusters of rich golden yellow flowers in spring. The warm, saffron-coloured blooms stand out beautifully against the dark green foliage, bringing a wonderful splash of colour as spring gets underway.

Growing to around 1.5–2 metres tall and 1–1.5 metres wide, ‘Saffron Queen’ forms a compact, bushy shrub that works beautifully as a feature plant, in mixed garden beds or planted in groups for a stronger display of colour.

It prefers a cool position with morning sun, filtered light or part shade and well-drained, acidic soil enriched with organic matter. Keep the soil consistently moist, particularly while establishing, and protect the plant from hot afternoon sun and drying winds. In Ballarat’s cold climate, choose a sheltered position and provide protection from severe frost, particularly for young plants, buds and flowers.
