Wisteria sinensis ‘Purple’ - Chinese Wisteria
Wisteria sinensis ‘Purple’ - Chinese Wisteria
Wisteria sinensis ‘Purple’, commonly known as Chinese Wisteria, is a spectacular deciduous climber with cascading clusters of fragrant purple flowers. Appearing in spring, often before the fresh green foliage fully develops, the blooms create a striking seasonal display.
A vigorous climber, it can eventually reach approximately 6–10 metres or more in height and 4–8 metres in spread when supported and allowed to grow freely. It is ideal for substantial pergolas, arches and other strong structures, providing beautiful spring colour and welcome summer shade. Regular pruning helps control its size and encourages flowering.
Plant in a sunny position with well-drained soil, and keep the roots cool and adequately watered during establishment and dry periods. Frost tolerant and long lived, Chinese Wisteria is well suited to Ballarat’s cool climate, although late frosts can damage flower buds and tender new growth. Install sturdy support from the beginning, as mature stems become heavy and woody. Keep growth clear of gutters and roof fittings.
At Navigators Nursery near Ballarat, purple Chinese Wisteria offers fragrant spring flowers and a magnificent climbing feature that develops character with age.
